The x-axis is continuous (time, position, gradient) and each colour is one series.
“Stacked”: the top edge is the total of all series and each band’s thickness is that series’ value. “Stacked to 100%”: totals at each x are rescaled to 100% to show changing composition. “Overlapping”: every series starts at 0 and is drawn translucently, well suited to comparing the shapes of a few series.
In a stacked chart only the bottom band has a flat baseline, so absolute changes in upper bands are hard to judge; use overlapping mode or a line chart to compare one series’ absolute values.
Hover to read each series’ value and share at that position; missing values are plotted as 0.
Percentage = series value / sum of all series at that x × 100; negative and missing values count as 0.
Up to about 12 series is recommended.
