Each arc on the circle is a category whose length is proportional to its total involvement; a ribbon between two arcs shows their relationship, and its width at each end corresponds to the value in that direction.
A symmetric square matrix (such as shared gene counts) gives one ribbon per pair; with “Directed”, the matrix is read as row → column flows and A→B and B→A are counted separately.
A two-way table whose row and column names differ (such as cell types × samples) is drawn as a bipartite relationship: row and column categories share the circle and ribbons only join a row to a column.
Hover over a ribbon to see both directions and click a legend entry to hide a category; with many links, “Ignore links below” highlights the main relationships.
Chord layout: arc length ∝ row total; ribbons are quadratic Bézier bands between arcs (Circos style; Krzywinski M. et al. 2009 Genome Res 19:1639–1645).
Up to 80 categories.
