How to read it

Polar bar chart

Each sector is a category and its length shows the value; with a group column, groups are stacked within each sector.

By default the radius is the square root of the value, so sector area is proportional to value and large values are not exaggerated when the eye compares areas; switch it off to make the radius proportional to value.

Polar bar charts suit cyclic categories (months, hours) or compositions with few categories; for precise comparison of lengths an ordinary bar chart is easier to read.

Hover to see each segment’s value; the downloadable table lists each sector’s value and its percentage of the total.

Method

Sectors have equal angles; square-root radius: r = r₀ + (R − r₀)·√(v / vmax).

Data size

Up to 80 sectors.
