How to read it

Sankey diagram

Vertical bars are nodes (categories) whose height is proportional to the total passing through them; ribbons between nodes are flows whose width is proportional to the quantity.

In a path table each record forms a flow between adjacent level columns; identical source–target pairs are summed, and the same name in different columns is treated as different nodes.

An edge list suits flows that are already summarised (source, target, quantity) and can describe multi-step networks, but must not contain cycles.

Hover to see each flow; with many small flows, “Hide flows below” makes the main paths clearer. The flow table gives each flow as a percentage of its source.

Method

Nodes are layered by longest path, and positions within each layer are relaxed iteratively towards the flow-weighted centre of connected nodes to reduce crossings; ribbon width ∝ flow.

Data size

Up to 2,000 flows and 8 levels.
