How to read it

SVG converter

Journals and office software often need bitmaps: choose a resolution (300 dpi is typical for submission, 600–1200 dpi for line art) and download a PNG or JPEG. The image is produced in your browser and the file never leaves your computer.

Output pixels = original size (inches) × DPI; a 6.4-inch-wide figure at 300 dpi becomes 1,920 pixels wide. You can instead set the width in pixels, with the height in proportion.

The PNG/JPEG files carry the DPI value, so Word or layout software shows them at the original physical size. JPEG has no transparency and is filled with the chosen background colour; PNG is better for figures with flat colours and text.

If the SVG uses fonts not installed on your computer, or links external images, the result may differ slightly from the original.

Method

Sizes follow CSS units (1 in = 96 px = 72 pt); resolution is stored in the PNG pHYs chunk (ISO/IEC 15948) and the JFIF density fields of JPEG.

Data size

Output up to 16,384 px per side and 80 megapixels in total.
