How to read it

Find, replace and regex extract

“Find and replace” rewrites matching text in the chosen column (or all columns); untick “Regular expression” to search for plain text. In regex mode the replacement may refer to groups as \1 or \g<name> (the dollar-sign form with a group number also works).

With “Match the whole cell only”, a cell is replaced only when it matches completely, which suits tidying NA or - into blanks; give a new column name to keep the original column unchanged.

“Extract” puts each bracketed group into a new column; rows that do not match are left blank (or dropped, if you keep only matching rows). Name the new columns yourself or use named groups (?<name>…).

The summary shows how many cells and rows changed, so you can check that the rule did what you intended.

Method

Uses JavaScript regular expressions; (?P<name>…) and \1 forms are accepted, with semantics matching data-frame str.replace / str.extract.

Data size

Up to 500,000 rows.
