How to read it

Circular heatmap

Each sector is a row (for example a gene) and each ring, from the inside out, is a column (sample); colour encodes the value. The first column is the innermost ring and column names sit in the gap at 12 o’clock.

With row z-scores on, colours compare one row across columns; absolute levels between rows are not comparable. Colours are limited to ±2 by default.

Row clustering uses Euclidean distance with average linkage so that rows with similar patterns sit next to each other; the order aids reading and is not a statistical test.

The circular layout suits tens to just over a hundred rows and a few (2–12) columns; with many rows the labels get small, so filter first.

Method

z-scores use the sample standard deviation (n − 1); clustering uses Euclidean distance with average linkage (UPGMA).

Data size

Up to 400 rows are drawn.
