COG (prokaryotes) and KOG (eukaryotes) place orthologous proteins in 26 functional categories, one letter each, grouped into information storage and processing, cellular processes and signalling, metabolism, and poorly characterised.
Each bar is the number of genes in one category; a gene with several letters (e.g. EH) or several COGs counts once in each relevant category, but only once within a category.
With a group column (e.g. strains, or up / down genes) bars are grouped; show the percentage of each group’s categorised genes to compare sets of different size.
Categories R and S are poorly characterised and often large; hide them if needed. Category names follow the NCBI COG 2020 definitions (British spelling).
Galperin M. Y. et al. (2021) Nucleic Acids Res 49:D274–D281 (COG 2020); Tatusov R. L. et al. (2003) BMC Bioinformatics 4:41 (COG / KOG). Percentage = genes in the category / genes of the group with any category × 100.
