How to read it

Taxa–sample Circos plot

One side of the circle shows the most abundant taxa, the other the sample groups; ribbon width is the abundance of that taxon in that group, so you can see at a glance which taxa come mainly from which groups and which taxa dominate each group.

By default values are mean relative abundances: each sample is converted to percentages and then averaged within the group, so every group sums to 100% regardless of sample number or depth. With “Summed reads within group”, groups with more or deeper samples look larger.

Taxa are ranked by their mean across groups and the top N are shown; the rest can be pooled as “Others”. With a taxonomy column you can merge to genus or phylum level. The same data can also be shown as a Sankey diagram.

Method

Relative abundance = reads / sample total × 100, averaged arithmetically within groups. Chord layout after Krzywinski M. et al. (2009) Genome Research 19:1639–1645.

Data size

Up to 50,000 taxa; at most 40 taxa in the chart.
